2003 West Houston Demographics and Development Trends

West Houston is projected to lead the Houston region in job growth over the next two decades. According to a West Houston Association (WHA) report, more than 227,000 new jobs will be created in West Houston from 2000 to 2025. WHA defines “West Houston” as an 850-square-mile area encompassing portions of Harris, Fort Bend and Waller counties.

West Houston is expected to continue its robust population growth, adding 25,000 new residents per year from 2000 through 2007.

“West Houston is adding new jobs and residents at a faster pace than the Houston region as a whole,” WHA President Roger Hord said.

Data analyzed in the WHA’s Demographic & Development Trends survey found that West Houston residents have, on average, higher levels of education, income and white-collar employment than their counterparts in the CMSA as a whole.

Other key findings from the WHA survey include:

West Houston now captures 34 percent of new single-family home construction in Greater Houston. Sales and starts in 2002 set all-time records for the area.

More than 10,000 new multifamily units are under construction or proposed for West Houston, representing roughly half of the new units under construction or proposed in Greater Houston.

New retail centers totaling over 1.3 million square feet were under construction in West Houston at the end of 2002.  An additional 4.6 million square feet is proposed.

Three million square feet of new office space is proposed for West Houston.
