WHA visits Harvest Green

On August 16, WHA’s Quality Planned Development Committee toured Harvest Green, the most successful “agri-hood” in the nation.  Located off Highway 99 and the Grand Parkway, Harvest Green is a master-planned community that boasts over 1,300 acres of residential, commercial, farm and educational space. Harvest Green applied for WHA’s Quality Planned Development (QPD) designation earlier this year and our QPD committee seized the opportunity to go tour the community at their August meeting.

The QPD committee met early to visit the Village Farm, which is soon to be the site of their year-round farmers market. This farmers market is not only incorporated right into the community but sells produce, grown in plots right across the foot bridge, to community residents and other patrons, including local restaurants.

The Village Farm is home to the community’s goats, chickens, vineyards, dog park, orchard and individual farming plots for the homeowners. While on tour, one of the farmers in charge of maintaining the agricultural space said

“We have a section where residents can sign up and pay to get their own little plot of about a 20 x 20 space and grow foods they can then come pick and take right their kitchens and prepare.”

The QPD committee walked the grounds, fed the goats, and then were met with lunch and a presentation in the Farm House from Director of Marketing, Hailey Peck.

“The whole place is a walkable trail system” she says about their 1,300 acre community, “and the agri-hood and trail offerings appeal to this new wave of millennial’s in particular.”

After the presentation the committee unanimously voted to approve Harvest Green’s application.  We look forward to honoring Harvest Green at our December 4th Holiday & Awards Reception. Thank you to Harvest Green for hosting us. We look forward to seeing you later this year!
