President’s Desk: December 2023

Howdy WHA Members!

If you haven’t voted in the City of Houston run-off election, here are a list of locations. Your last chance to vote is this Saturday, December 9th from 7am to 7pm. If you are undecided, here are some voting guides: League of Women Voters, Scenic Houston, Houston Chronicle.

Last month we welcomed Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan, who discussed legislative updates, including flood control funding, improved parks, power grid reliability, and property appraisal reform, emphasizing the need for communication, infrastructure investment, and collaboration for regional development. Click here for a summary of the event.

This month we have a new video about our Flood Control and Drainage Committee. This is the latest in our series of videos that explain what our committees do. Also in this month’s newsletter, we are continuing the trend of WHA Member generated content. This month we are highlighting the health impacts of Sustainable Infrastructure, an ongoing conversation taking place in the Sustainable Infrastructure committee. If you have an interest in contributing an article in the future, please let us know as we are already working to schedule the pieces for 2024.

Speaking of 2024, you may have noticed that two events for next year are already on the website with a few more likely to come before the end of the year! We have a forum to discuss the Marketing Value of Sustainable Infrastructure on Feb 15th and our Rising Leader’s TopGolf tournament on May 23rd. While the tournament is months away, sponsorships are now available. Individual teams and tickets will be available in the months ahead. Class 9 of our Rising Leaders program will starts in April. We’ve already had a lot of interest. If you would like to nominate someone, including yourself, please reach out to me by the end of January.

For those of you looking for some WHA engagement before the end of the year, we have a handful of committee meetings taking place this week and next. The Quality Planned Development Committee meets on December 7th. The Regional Mobility Committee is meeting on December 11th. The Sustainable Infrastructure Committee is meeting on December 12th. The Education & Workforce Committee is meeting December 13th.  If you would like to be added to the email list or calendar invites for these committees, or any others, please let us know.

Thank you for your support of the West Houston Association and working to improve quality of life for the 2,000,000+ people who live, work, and play across the region!

Happy Holidays!
