Howdy WHA Members!
As we enter November, Greater West Houston continues to experience developments at every level of government that will shape our region’s future. At the state level, Texas is advancing major infrastructure commitments, including a $20 billion, 20-year investment through the Texas Water Fund for water supply, wastewater, and flood mitigation, alongside TxDOT’s new $146 billion 10-year plan to improve mobility and congestion relief—both of which directly impact the future growth and resilience of Greater West Houston. Nationally, the federal government has been shutdown for over a month, extending uncertainty for programs that directly impact quality growth ranging from regional infrastructure to local economic development.
Locally, all eyes turn to the November 4th election, where voters will decide who will fill the open seats for Houston City Council At Large 4 and for Congressional District 18. Both are heading into runoffs. As these outcomes unfold, WHA remains focused on ensuring that infrastructure investment, mobility improvements, and sustainable development remain top priorities for policymakers across all levels of government.
Last month, we also celebrated excellence in quality growth at our Public Officials and Awards Reception, recognizing the people and projects shaping the future of our region. From infrastructure innovation to thoughtful community design, this year’s honorees exemplify how collaboration drives lasting impact. You can read more about the recipients and their contributions here.
Our committees continue to move forward this month with a full slate of meetings and initiatives. Our Flood Control & Drainage Committee meets on November 6th this month. Our Government Affairs Committee will meet on November 8th to discuss policy trends influencing quality growth and the election outcomes. Our Sustainable Infrastructure Committee will be taking a tour of the new Houston Zoo facilities on November 11th to better understand how other public spaces can make better use of sustainable elements in construction. Followed by our Education & Workforce Committee on November 13th; touring the Miller Career Center to better understand the role of career and technical education aligning with workforce needs. Our Parks, Recreation & Open Spaces Committee has two working groups now, one will be discussing what makes for a quality park on November 12th, and the other focusing on trails and connectivity in the greater West Houston region at a date to be determined. Later in the month, our Regional Mobility Committee will meet on November 17th, our Quality Planned Development Committee will meet on November 20th to review updates to QPD standards, and our Water Resources Committee will convene that same afternoon to discuss ongoing municipal reuse projects and the February 2026 forum.
Looking ahead, mark your calendars for December 5th when we host the Future of Transportation: 290 Mobility Forum. The program will highlight key investments and strategies driving one of our region’s most vital transportation corridors, offering insights into how mobility improvements support economic growth and long-term connectivity.
As we approach the close of the year, I’m encouraged by the progress our members continue to make through collaboration, leadership, and shared purpose. Together, we’re building the foundation for a stronger, more resilient, and better-connected Houston region.
