Howdy WHA Members!
As 2025 draws to a close, Greater West Houston continues to see movement on several fronts that will influence our region in the year ahead. The Harris County Flood Control District (HCFCD) has recently accelerated maintenance and repair work: in November 2025 they “nearly tripled projects,” cleared sediment and debris from bayous, and expanded rapid-response efforts after a maintenance-fund boost. TxDOT’s commitment to multimodal and active-transportation investments is also evident: in November 2025, the Texas Transportation Commission approved more than $284.8 million in funding statewide for bicycle, pedestrian and connected-path infrastructure — which can help offset congestion and improve mobility across growing suburbs. Meanwhile, at the city level, the Houston City Council on December 3, 2025 approved a $35.9 million redesign of Bissonnet Street, a corridor running through parts of West and Southwest Houston, funded largely by a federal “Safe Streets and Roads for All” grant. The improvements will include wider sidewalks, safer crossings, and ADA-compliant upgrades, reflecting local commitment to infrastructure and mobility equity
With the November 4th election behind us there are now more questions than answers with the Texas congressional redistricting. Meanwhile a growing number of congress members are not planning to run for reelection including three in the greater Houston area. Locally, we are in the middle of a runoff for Houston City Council At Large 4 and the runoff for Congressional District 18 won’t be until January 31st. As decisions continue to take shape, WHA is committed to keeping infrastructure funding, mobility enhancements, and long-term sustainability at the forefront of conversations with leaders at every level of government.
Last month, we also celebrated excellence in quality growth at our Public Officials and Awards Reception, recognizing the people and projects shaping the future of our region. From infrastructure innovation to thoughtful community design, this year’s honorees exemplify how collaboration drives lasting impact. You can read more about the recipients and their contributions here.
Our committees continue to move forward this month with a full slate of meetings and initiatives. Our Flood Control & Drainage Committee meets on December 3rd this month. Our Government Affairs Committee will meet on December 8th to discuss policy trends influencing quality growth and the election outcomes. At their December 9th meeting our Sustainable Infrastructure Committee will be working on their Spring 2026, and our Parks, Recreation & Open Spaces Committee is holding a happy hour that afternoon. Our Education & Workforce Committee is meeting at a special time on December 12th to focus on planning for 2026. On December 15th our Regional Mobility Committee will meet with folks from METRO to discuss future public transit plans. Our Quality Planned Development Committee will hold a special virtual meeting on December 18th to review updates to QPD standards before the holidays.
Looking ahead, mark your calendars for our Municipal Water Reuse Forum on February 19th. The program will explore how municipal water reuse is shaping the future of sustainable growth and securing long-term water supplies. Featuring case studies and presenters from City of Richmond and City of Katy that highlight innovative strategies, infrastructure solutions, and policy opportunities that strengthen resilience across our regional water systems.
As we approach the close of the year, I’m encouraged by the progress our members continue to make through collaboration, leadership, and shared purpose. Together, we’re building the foundation for a stronger, more resilient, and better-connected Houston region.
