WHA Members Can Fight Flooding by Voting TODAY

Early voting for Harris County’s Proposition A (aka the Flood Bond) starts today and will run through August 21st.  Voting locations are available at www.harrisvotes.com.  Proposition A Election Day is August 25th—the one-year anniversary of Harvey.  We are asking our members to go vote and to please tell their colleagues, friends, family, and employees to vote in what Judge Emmett called, “The most important local vote of my lifetime.”

Few organizations have done more to bring this vote about than the West Houston Association.

Our members took the lead in organizing Harris Plus Flood Solutions, developing the regional Houston Stronger Plan (www.houstonstronger.net), working with County leaders on ideas, and helping organize and fund the Fight Flooding PAC (www.fightflooding.org).

By creating these coalitions and plans, WHA helped increase the size of the proposed Harris County bond amount, expedite the bond election, provide public input and transparency in the plan development process, and secure federal matching funds.

Proposition A, as proposed by Harris County Flood Control District, will fund for 237 flood control projects, including $1.2 billion for channel improvements, $401 million for detention basin, $242 million for buyouts, and $12.5 million to remap the floodplain.  Proposition A will also pay for a county-wide flood warning system and keep $500 million in reserve, which can be used as a match for federal projects.

The actions of the West Houston Association’s Executive Committee, Flood Control and Drainage Committee, and Impact Award Winner, Joe B. Allen of ABHR were decisive, persuasive, and ultimately effective in providing solutions for quality growth and to build a more resilient region.

The West Houston Association’s Executive Committee was the first organization to formally endorse Harris County’s Proposition A (aka the Flood Bond).  WHA members contributed over $200,000 to the Fight Flooding PAC, with key members working to raise $100,000 more.  Judge Ed Emmett is the chair of the Fight Flooding PAC.  WHA President and CEO, Auggie Campbell, serves as PAC treasurer, and has been very involved in the campaign, which will launch into full view on August 13th.  The Fight Flooding PAC has raised over $1.1 million of its $1.2 million goal. Now, all of WHA’s members have another chance to help.

Please vote today and spread this message.
