President’s Desk: October 2022

Howdy WHA Members!

On September 8th, we held our Annual Public & Elected Officials Reception at the Hyatt Regency West Houston to recognize the hard work and dedication of those who serve the Greater West Houston region. The event also marked the public release of our 2023 Economic and Demographic Profile. The document can be downloaded from the website, or you can pick up a physical copy at our upcoming Westside City Council Forum with Houston City Council members Amy Peck (District A), Marry Nan Huffman (District G), & Tiffany Thomas (District F), on October 6th.

In September our Rising Leaders met up at Cross Creek Ranch to learn more about what it means to be recognized as a Quality Planned Development and toured the 2017 Sustainability Stars award winning polishing pond. We also kicked off two projects in collaboration with Rice University’s School of Social Science for the Fall of 2022. One project is on Neighborhood Revitalization and is facilitated by Taylor Reed (Vogler & Spencer). The other project follows up on previous “Quality of Life” research and is facilitated by Ernesto Alfaro (LJA). The results of these projects will be presented in December.

Also in September: WHA was represented at the launch event for ConnectSmart, a new app developed by TxDOT and partners to improve mobility across the greater Houston region, we participated in CenterPoint’s Energy Customer Advisory Council with the Greater Houston Partnership, we attended the Fort Bend County Innovation Council Launch hosted by Houston Exponential, and Jennifer Boggs moderated a Houston Stronger meeting featuring U.S. Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher and Harris County Commissioner Adrian Garcia.

Coming up in October, we have several committee meetings: Flood Control & Drainage on October 10th, Sustainable Infrastructure on October 11th, Education & Workforce on October 12th, Regional Mobility on October 17th, and Quality Planned Development on October 20th.  If you would like to be added to the email list or calendar invites for any committees, please let us know.

On November 1st, please join us for a special Port of Houston Regional Mobility Forum with Ric Campo that will discuss the connections between the port and distribution here on the west side. Then on December 1st we will be hosting our annual awards celebration where we will recognize our 2022 Compass Award winners, Star of Excellence, Quality Planned Developments, and Sustainable Stars.

Thank you for your support of the West Houston Association and working to improve quality of life for the 2,000,000+ people who live, work, and play across the Greater West Houston region!
